Is the 6-month Stock Market Rally About to End?.

Since I quoted Simon Johnson yesterday doubting that meaningful financial regulation will come of recent financial follies, I was interested to read Ezra Klein's interview about such regulation with Congressman Barney Frank. Bailed Banks

The Bush-Obama strategy of throwing trillions at the banks to solve the mortgage crisis has been a failure. The banks welcome public money to remove toxic assets from their books, insured by we-the-taxpayers, as well as the hundreds of billions in direct handouts, but they’ve hardly returned the favor. They’ve used these funds to pay mega salaries and prop up stock values, choices that obviously benefit them. They needed public support, no one wanted the system to collapse. [more...]

Entrepreneurship 101: Create Marketing Knowledge About Local Conditions And Opportunities

How did you learn how to create demand for the offerings your company provides? Most people either go to school or learn on the job. Sometimes, they do a little of each . . . as I did. When I was studying at Harvard Business School, two methods were used to teach marketing: cases involving specific decisions facing real marketing managers; and unpaid consulting assignments working for companies with unresolved marketing issues. In either course style the issues studied always related to U.S. [more...]

Good Business Sense: Microsoft’s Free Accounting Solution

To be truly successful, you have to treat your business like a business, and good accounting practices are a big part of that. Yet only twenty percent of the twenty million small and home-based businesses in the U.S. use accounting software to track their business finances. Many home-based business owners’ “bookkeeping systems” still consist of pens, paper, and boxes stacked in closets. Worse, many more don’t keep records at all. They have no idea where, or if, they’re making or losing money. [more...]

Financial Dispatch: Private sector still losing jobs

Andrew Torgan CNN Financial News Producer The first of this week’s big employment reports is out and the numbers are a bit of a disappointment. Payroll-processing firm ADP says private-sector employers cut 254,000 jobs in September, down from a revised 277,000 in August. But that is the smallest monthly total since July 2008, even though it’s worse than the 200,000 loss economists had forecast. Large businesses, those with 500 or more workers, let 61,000 workers go in September. [more...]

Germany - The Bitter-Sweet Tears Of Angela von Merkel

German voters gave Chancellor Angela Merkel the green light for a second term on Sunday, along with a clear mandate to form a new government with the liberal Free Democrat Party (FDP). But just what exactly is the new government likely to do? Underlying Demand During a Housing Shortage

There is an impressive amount of garbage in today's headlines to sift through. Most of it, of course, is rubbish.
