Dragnet: On Assignment in the Nation’s Capitol - bobmccarty.com 09/09/2009 As a youngster, I was a huge fan of the television show, Dragnet .  With Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and his partner, Officer Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan), the show was kind of corny, but I liked it a lot more than most of the fare that flashes on the small screen today.  In the recently-released video mashup below, the cops from the 1960s police drama give President Barack Obama, the perpetrator of a modern-day [more...]

Palin’s Advocacy: The Turning Point in Health Care Reform Debate

For an uneducated, unsophisticated rube and former governor from a backwater state, Sarah Palin sure can drive a debate.  With prospects for passage of his sweeping overhaul of the American health care delivery system fading with every speech, President Barack Obama is making  it increasingly clear that Palin will be recognized, for good or ill, as perhaps the most prominent single political figure responsible for stopping it in its tracks. It’s a remarkable story. Broad Cast 11 September 2009

(Alan Turing) Many historians credit the cracking of the German Enigma code by English mathematician Alan Turing with eventual Allied victory in World War II. At the very least, this breakthrough turned the tide of the war and saved untold thousands of lives. After the war, Turing went on to invent the Turing machine, which is considered the basis of all modern computing. For his accomplishments, in 1952 Turing was convicted of "gross indecency" because he admitted to having a gay relationship. [more...]

UK anti-file sharing move angers ISPs

p2pnet news view | P2P |  Politics:- All is not well in Not-So-Great-Britain following the announcement, “People who persist in swapping copyrighted films and music will have their internet connections cut off under tough new laws to be proposed by the government,” as The Guardian summed it up. P.S. On Stephen Hawking and the UK NHS We took a lot of heat for using Stephen Hawking as an example of someone who'd suffer under a socialized health system. But a closer look at the treatment he got in the U.K. shows it wasn't all roses. Do we have to say more? The sorry reality is that a socialized program with no accountability and no competition is inferior to a free private system that must put its clients first — or go out of business. [more...]

Thought for Today: The singular most important and least reported event today was the announcement of a settlement of the lawsuit brought by the Italian city against JP Morgan concerning OTC derivatives sold to that city.
