50%+ rally in the stock market but situation is getting much worse

We have enjoyed a +50 percent rally in the stock market yet this rally has been unable to create private sector jobs or stem the economic pain for most. Millions have seen their bills skyrocket, credit card interest rates hiked, hour’s cut, wages slashed, and are dealing with an accelerating decline in home prices (FL) and pitiful stock portfolios. The Economist Who Made Your World Better

It’s easy to give economists a hard time.  Like academics, it’s hard to figure out what they really do besides sit around and think about the economy.  They don’t run businesses or make anything useful.  Of course most big corporations have one on the payroll to look into the crystal ball and we all know that we need a few tame economists to deliver stern warnings during market bubbles and to run the Fed.  But can you name a single thing that an economist has ever done that actually benefits you? Translating Corporate Speak: Wynn [Unforeseen Upside Edition #3]

More magic from Steve Wynn — slightly delayed due to our summer escapades — on his 2Q09 conference call. The Administration is more of a problem than they are of a help usually, if you read the headlines. Everyone is frightened to death about runaway inflation if these deficits are allowed to take place. The good news is the Senate seems to be slowing it down. Commonwealth in the networked economy [2]

Overcapacity results in a bailout of General Motors to the tune of $50billion Last December the boss of Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, predicted that the economic crisis would finally force the world’s car industry to confront profit-destroying overcapacity and change its broken business model. He also thought that, by the end of 2010, consolidation would result in there being only six high-volume carmakers left in the world. This week, as the industry gathered in Frankfurt, he returned to his theme. [more...]

Public spending cuts will be very painful
