The Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference: Secretary Napolitano Speaks About Our Security

Let's face it:  the Department of Homeland Security should be called the Department of Really Bad Stuff.  Combating terrorist networks bent on injuring Americans?  DHS is on the job.  Half of Kentucky without power for a week after an ice storm?  Yup, DHS.  Smuggling of people and drugs across a porous and dangerous border?  That's also DHS's beat.  Basically, 9/11, Katrina, and the immigration beat rolled into one.  Where other agencies provide education, veterans' services, and environmental [more...]

My Advice for Stephen Strasburg

August 19, 2009 | By Sammy Gertzman In Finance | by Mika TravestaMr. Strasburg: I understand how much hype you’ve gotten as a pitching prospect and I know how dominant you were in college. I, too, believe that you have an amazing set of pitches and could go really far in the majors. At the same time, I think you’re being utterly ridiculous to insist on $50 million when you’ve never played a baseball game as a pro. I have many reasons for the basis of my opinion. One example is Mark Prior. [more...]

Floatin' Powa News Service: The Joker Is Wild...

In the image below The Joker is clearly depicted as an evil knife wielding Jewish demon of the Zohar who is about to impale all that is holy in Gotham City. The Joker sports a star of David with an inverted pentagram (a symbol of Satanic worship) emblazoned on it's center, and written on the wheel behind him you can clearly see the words HASHEM and SABBAOTH. Somehow I fail to recall the public outcry and media outrage over this depiction. [more...]

Public Private Competition in Garbage Collection

The public option for health care appears to be dead , so this is a bit late, but I keep hearing that there are no examples of public-private competition, let alone successful ones. But there are examples of this, and they have been successful. We are used to the argument that the private sector can discipline and usually beat the government in terms of providing services at minimum cost (though I should note that is not always true). Daily Mail UK: Drivers’ details sold by DVLA are used in bizarre roadside adverts for Castrol

The Daily Mail UK reports that the car registration data of millions of motorists were sold to an oil company that used the data for marketing. Giant digital billboards from Castrol scanned motorists’ license plates, ran the plates through a database and instantly displayed on the billboards what the best oil was for that specific driver’s car. It’s not surprising that data collected for one use was also used — without the motorists’ consent — for another use.
