Getting Naked

Just wanted to make sure you were paying attention because this is an important topic. What’s the likelihood that public companies are being destroyed by millions of shares of stock that don’t exist? Today, the SEC held a hearing about short-selling, which is essentially betting that a company’s shares are overvalued. Georgetown finance professor James Angel explained the benefits on the Marketplace Morning Report : AMY SCOTT: Angel says short-sellers provide a service. [more...]

Bailed Banks

The Bush-Obama strategy of throwing trillions at the banks to solve the mortgage crisis has been a failure. The banks welcome public money to remove toxic assets from their books, insured by we-the-taxpayers, as well as the hundreds of billions in direct handouts, but they’ve hardly returned the favor. They’ve used these funds to pay mega salaries and prop up stock values, choices that obviously benefit them. They needed public support, no one wanted the system to collapse. [more...]

Entrepreneurship 101: Create Marketing Knowledge About Local Conditions And Opportunities

How did you learn how to create demand for the offerings your company provides? Most people either go to school or learn on the job. Sometimes, they do a little of each . . . as I did. When I was studying at Harvard Business School, two methods were used to teach marketing: cases involving specific decisions facing real marketing managers; and unpaid consulting assignments working for companies with unresolved marketing issues. In either course style the issues studied always related to U.S. [more...]

Always Use Caution When Using 0% APR Credit Card Offers

Amazon.de Widgets There is nothing wrong with chasing offers of 0% credit cards, in fact many people have benefited greatly from doing just that, but did you honestly expect the credit card companies to allow this card jumping to continue indefinitely?Offers of 0% credit cards have been around for quite a few years now; they are a successful marketing ploy by the credit card industry aimed at stealing customers from competitors and were an overnight success with a public that was fed up of paying [more...]

We’re Still a Nation of Spenders, Not Squirrels

Will we be spenders or savers? It is a big question for the economy. Without a rise in consumer spending it is hard to get economic growth. It is also a big question for retailers and other businesses relying on consumer demand. The evidence on what has been happening so far is mixed. Official figures suggest that retail spending has held up better than many other parts of the economy, with a 2.1% rise in sales volume last month compared with a year earlier. [more...]

Bad Credit Debt Consolidation Loan Advice

Before considering a bad credit debt consolidation loan, think very carefully about your financial status. Once a consolidation loan goes into effect, it often has to remain in place if bankruptcy is declared further down the road. In the past, it was a dishonorable thing to declare bankruptcy, but times have changed with our current bad overall economical situation. Consumers are wise to consider all options before deciding upon what the best option is for your unique financial situation. [more...]

The House Bounce?

Houses bounce too… Not much happened yesterday. The Dow fell 47 points. The newspapers attributed the reversal to surprisingly low consumer confidence numbers. Apparently, consumers aren’t so sure this crisis is over. As we reported yesterday, they’re saving money…maybe even at an 8% rate. Oil didn’t move yesterday. Neither did gold. The Wall Street Journal reported that markets were reacting to “mixed data.” That is to say, some reports were encouraging. Others were not. [more...]

Banks want to keep Americans stupid and in debt. A lesson in economics.

The first lesson we learned from the current economic collapse is: The market does not solve everything. Despite what the neo-cons like Ronald Reagan and George Dubbya told us, turning all state responsibility over to the market means that the entire country is motivated by profit and therefore operates under a value system of greed. This market-first government has not benefited most of us. In fact, it's only really benefited the super rich, like Reagan and Dubbya. [more...]

Ravens Use Big Fourth Quarter To Put Away Chiefs

September 30, 2009 | By Ross Everett In Blogging | by Ross EverettThe bad news for the Baltimore Ravens in their 2009 NFL regular season opener was that their vaunted defense gave up 24 points despite holding a decided advantage in every other statistical category. The good news was that their offense was more than up to the task, answering with 38 points and a franchise record 501 yards. All told, the Ravens opened their season on a winning note beating the Kansas City Chiefs 38-24. [more...]

In The News Today

Barrick and its OTC Short of Gold Derivative Obligations: I am asked constantly how Barrick can cover all their hedges. The answer is quite simple. Barrick does not have to buy one ounce of gold. You buy your way out of hedge contracts with paper money. The simple question is what does the long side want to release the obligation in light of future possible profits on the position? What a hell of a needlessly expensive mess. [more...]

Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act an improvement over House bill on offsets

With respect to offsets, the Kerry-Boxer bill is a distinct improvement over the ACES . It also addresses some issues that will be important to the functioning of a trading market, but still leaves some uncertainties that could cause problems in the market. [more...]

The Bank Short Sale – The Best Way Out Of Foreclosure?

by Anthony Mauwer A bank short sale is not the only choice we have to avoid foreclosure – but it is definitely better than some of the other possibilities. If a homeowner is already in this situation, they are already dealing with intense financial anxiety from every angle. If approved for a bank short sale, much of this stress will be alleviated because they’ll be in a great position to purchase another home. [more...]

If You Have A Debt Problem, Then Admit It!

You Can’t Solve A Debt Problem If You Deny Its Existence.  If you have a major debt problem and want to end it, then go look at yourself in a mirror and say, "I have a huge debt problem, it’s suffocating me, and it’s taking away my freedom", or whatever words feel right to you. Tax or No Tax?

The good news: nearly 50% of American households (47%, to be precise) won’t pay any federal income tax in 2009. The bad news: the remaining 50% (or so) will have to foot the bill for everyone. You can thank (or blame) the new economic recovery package for bumping the percentage of taxpayers who won’t be paying a wee bit higher (about 10%). But don’t just start pointing fingers at the working poor. [more...]
