Deciding Who Should Be In Charge
In the 2008 primaries, when all was said and done, you could say the Republicans simply settled for John McCain as their candidate, by default. Giuliani was a bust – beyond his 9/11 shtick there was nothing there, and he was from New York City, which would never play that well in the south, along with being in his third marriage after two messy divorces, and one of his former wives being a cousin. The evangelical right really didn’t want to have to deal with that. [more...]

Unmasking Obama…Obama’s Work Ethic….
It is now abundantly clear that the image of Barack Obama sold to the American electorate was tightly edited, air-brushed, and exaggerated. He has worn a series of masks — eloquent orator, brilliant scholar, centrist, and literary sensation. All of these masks are coming off as he copes with a job for which image will not suffice. For instance, hiding behind the eloquent orator mask is a guy who says “uhh” a lot when he is winging it, and who makes lots of factual and grammatical mistakes . [more...]

US Federal Government Ran the Biggest Deficit in History
The rally may end any day, but it didn't end yesterday. Stocks rose 127 points, as measured by the Dow. Oil closed at $66. Gold rose $2.50. We said we were doing some serious thinking this week. Maybe it is the season. But more and more, our thoughts become grayer. Less black. Less white. Less hard. Less soft. A few years ago, it looked to us as though the world financial system had gone to war. We cheerfully awaited the victory parade. We figured Mr. Market would whup the feds good and hard. [more...]

How To Find The Cheapest Auto Insurance!
One of the most important things to do when looking for cheap car insurance is to take some time to compare offerings by several insurance companies.Everyone wants to know which insurance company is cheaper than everyone else, if this were the case; it would probably only one there. The truth of the matter is that there is no such thing “cheapest.” Thus, while a friend may pay a lower rate with your provider, this does not necessarily mean that they can provide lower rates for others. Inflation is Our Future
On one hand, the deflationists are claiming that given the extremely high debt levels in the West, further inflation is impossible. On the other side of the argument, many proponents of inflation are calling for Zimbabwe style hyperinflation. In this business, everyone is entitled to their opinion; however it is my contention that we will get neither deflation nor hyperinflation. If my assessment is correct, once business activity picks up, our world will have to deal with high inflation. [more...]

Underlying Demand During a Housing Shortage
There is an impressive amount of garbage in today's headlines to sift through. Most of it, of course, is rubbish. But there are probably two main takeaways from the last 24 hours: don't fall for the earnings recovery story, and housing is still a sucker's bet in country's whose names begin and end with the letter "A". Let's take the earnings recovery story first. Tomorrow we're going to have a look at the outlook for Aussie bank earnings. [more...]

NOT Available on DVD: ‘The Klansman’
Only in the 1970’s could Hollywood have turned its attention to the subject of racism in the deep south and come up with something so jaw-dropping in it’s political incorrectness as THE KLANSMAN. On the surface the 1974 film is a serious depiction of the bigotry and the racial confrontations that tear apart an Alabama town in the 1960’s, but watching it today THE KLANSMAN comes off at times serious, laughable, mean-spirited, sleazy, and racist. A Delicate Balance: the history of Liberals and hung Parliaments
The Liberal Democrat History Grou p meeting at Bournemouth Conference, supported by The Guardian, looked at hung Parliaments. In his introduction, the meeting chair Duncan Brack explained that one reason for picking the topic is that work such as that by John Curtice has shown that the odds of the next general election producing a hung Parliament are much better than they have been for many years. It is a point that was also made earlier this year by Michael Crick . [more...]
