Britain's Brown makes pre-election populist pitch

BRIGHTON, England -- Prime Minister Gordon Brown , seeking to stave off an expected election defeat , pledged Tuesday to restore trust in Britain's tarnished politics, kick start its stuttering economy and slash government debt. Brown sketched out a likely Labour Party manifesto as he announced a blizzard of populist policies which he hopes will boost the organization's flagging ratings before a national election , which must by law be called by June. BRIGHTON, England -- U.K. [more...]

50%+ rally in the stock market but situation is getting much worse

We have enjoyed a +50 percent rally in the stock market yet this rally has been unable to create private sector jobs or stem the economic pain for most. Millions have seen their bills skyrocket, credit card interest rates hiked, hour’s cut, wages slashed, and are dealing with an accelerating decline in home prices (FL) and pitiful stock portfolios. In order to get a sustained recovery, consumer spending (70% GDP) will have to rebound sharply, which is not going to happen anytime soon. [more...]

The Socialist Strategy

By Daniel Greenfield Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Government is essentially a national management system, taking on those tasks that it would be unwise or unworkable to turn over to the free market. Good government functions as intended. Bad government takes over the nation and becomes an absolute force, looting and raiding public resources, suppressing individual freedoms in order to keep itself in power. In olden days this sort of government was considered a tyranny. [more...]

A number of publications from non-Nolo publishers have a wealth of information beyond what is in this book. The Battle Continues

The rally may end any day, but it didn’t end yesterday. Stocks rose 127 points, as measured by the Dow. Oil closed at $66. Gold rose $2.50. We said we were doing some serious thinking this week. Maybe it is the season. But more and more, our thoughts become grayer. Less black. Less white. Less hard. Less soft. A few years ago, it looked to us as though the world financial system had gone to war. We cheerfully awaited the victory parade. We figured Mr. Market would whup the feds good and hard. [more...]

The Sad Tale of Gansel and Hetel

The plight of Hansel and Gretel is known to many but have you ever heard the sad story of Gansel and Hetel? Two middle class kids “adrift” in the consumerist shopping mall culture take a bath in debt and almost ruin their lives… can they be saved? Bad Health & Bad Luck Gansel and Hetel had it rough growing up with divorced parents.  Their dad didn’t take care of his health and didn’t buy enough life insurance so their mom was left to raise them totally alone after he passed away.  [more...]

New US Credit Card Legislation Has Allowed Credit Card Companies Too Much Time!

Amazon.de Widgets President Obama’s credit card legislation, although welcomed during these times of harsh economic woe, unfortunately will probably fall just short of what every American has been screaming out for, a strong leash on the credit card industry. Legislation to regulate the credit card companies from imposing financially sapping interest hikes and reducing credit lines without warning, will shortly be announced, and not a moment too soon as a battle weary American public continually [more...]

The Need for Greater Transparency

by State Rep. Jason Murphey (OK-31) I have either been involved in or closely observed some level of government for almost ten years. In that time I have studied a series of local, county and state government entities, as well as an array of government public trusts. I have spent a good deal of time listening to those groups argue about why they needed to continue receiving taxpayer largesse, need more taxes and fees, or want approval for new debt spending. Public Option Vote Could Pit Democrat Vs. Democrat

WASHINGTON — It'll be Democrat vs. Democrat as lawmakers go back to work on health care Tuesday. The Senate Finance Committee is expected to consider whether the government should offer its own insurance plan for the middle class in competition with private carriers. A public option is the top goal for liberals, but it has no Republican support and moderate Democrats say the Senate will never go along. So Tuesday's debate is expected to pit Democratic liberals against moderates. [more...]

Megawoman

From a Philosopher King to a Businesswoman in a Pantsuit It was once said that as goes California, so goes the nation. That may not be as true as it once was. California is certainly a very blue state in a very purple country. But just because the nation will never be as pro-choice as the Golden State doesn’t mean that general trends don’t tend to start out west and work their way eastward. California discovered Nixon before the nation did. Ditto with Reagan. [more...]

Why Health Care Reform Must Fail

FDIC Seeks Prepayment from Banks – Analyst Blog

In order to replenish the declining fund of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) that insures regular deposit accounts when banks fail, the agency may ask U.S. banks to prepay fees for three years. Under the plan, banks would have to prepay their insurance premiums of $12 billion a year for 2010-2012, for a total of about $36 billion. The fees could, however, vary somewhat according to growth in total insured deposits. The FDIC board will discuss the issue today at its public meeting. [more...]

Behind the Gambit in the A.S.C.-Xerox Deal

DealBook’s Andrew Ross Sorkin makes the case that the uptick in the stock market and the slow return of credit are reviving the mergers and acquisitions market.
