Corruption charges prompt Congo to lobby Congress

In the past few years a handful of private equity or hedge funds have garnered a reputation as “vulture funds,” a term coined to describe companies that profit from the debt of extremely poor countries. The hedge funds buy defaulted debt for pennies on the dollar, then sue them later for the full amount owed in U.S. and European courts. Both in 2008 and earlier this year, members of Congress introduced bills to protect these debtor nations from lawsuits. [more...]

Wasting away

Not a day goes by here without new arguments why interest rates won’t rise. They go like this: The weather’s been good since last winter ended. People are enjoying it. They play and prosper in the sun. If the snows come it will be bad. We are not ready. We will suffer. Therefore the government will not allow it to be so. Other variations, too. Like pointing to Japan where rates have stayed low for two decades. Or claiming central banks will print money, buy all the bonds, and keep rates low. [more...]

Big Merger Deals Signal Restored Confidence

After a period of hibernation, corporate mergers and acquisitions are back on the agenda, Andrew Ross Sorkin writes in his latest DealBook column. While the price tags may not be hitting the highs they did during the boom times, the return of bigger M.&A. deals signals an increasing confidence among chief executives, who until now have been hesitant to ink any deals, Mr. Sorkin says. One segment that has not jumped back into the deal-making fray, however, is the private equity industry. [more...]

Never Show up to a Gunfight with a Knife

Why do so many people struggle with money? Why is it so difficult to get ahead in a time of such prosperity? Why do the rich keep getting richer while the poor and middle class seem to continually struggle? You see, every day you make money choices that affect all areas of your life. [more...]

Bonds & equities: Expect a major shift

This post is a guest contribution by Dian Chu*, market analyst, trader and author of the Economic Forecasts and Opinions blog. The S&P has skyrocketed 58% since its bottom in early March, while the Dow is up 50% and the Nasdaq has surged 68% during that time. Meanwhile, bond prices led a rally as rates on the benchmark 10-year note have declined some 40 basis points since early August. This is good news for business: higher bond prices make it easier to refinance debt and stay in business. [more...]

Individual Voluntary Arrangements And The Entailments

by Edward Woodwards If you ever encounter a serious financial crisis in your life like, you are under heavy amount of debt, normally 15,000 USD or more, the best thing to do would be opting for an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement); it will help you lead to a debt-free life again. A Jedi can feel the Force flowing through him

Although there are some who continue to worry that the Fed's massive liquidity programs will ignite consumer inflation , I continue to view this as a very low risk. Instead of excess liquidity flowing into consumer spending, it could flow into the capital markets, creating new distortions. [more...]

Behind the Gambit in the A.S.C.-Xerox Deal

DealBook’s Andrew Ross Sorkin makes the case that the uptick in the stock market and the slow return of credit are reviving the mergers and acquisitions market. The question, however, is not whether the M.&A. market will revive, but instead whether everyone will simply go back to the old party and its bad practices. The question arises yet again as a result of Darwin Deason’s latest gambit. Mr. Deason is the chairman of Affiliated Computer Services, and owns a near-controlling stake in the company. [more...]
