Update1 Local Housing Could Get $35 Billion in Aid

There are several approaches you can take when reacting to the announcement that Washington has proposed kicking in $35 billion to support local housing. While some lawmakers — most notably Barney Frank in recent months — have advocated for additional home-ownership programs (some which cater to low-income and under-qualified borrowers), other lawmakers, like Rep. Scott Garrett (R., N.J.), feel that instead of becoming more involved in housing, the government should be withdrawing itself. [more...]

50%+ rally in the stock market but situation is getting much worse

We have enjoyed a +50 percent rally in the stock market yet this rally has been unable to create private sector jobs or stem the economic pain for most. Millions have seen their bills skyrocket, credit card interest rates hiked, hour’s cut, wages slashed, and are dealing with an accelerating decline in home prices (FL) and pitiful stock portfolios. In order to get a sustained recovery, consumer spending (70% GDP) will have to rebound sharply, which is not going to happen anytime soon. [more...]

Can Collection Agencies Sue Me For Outstanding Debt?

Amazon.de Widgets The question that many people are asking is ‘can collection agency sue for a debt?’ With the amount of people suffering financial hardship due to the current economic crisis the number of people facing difficulties paying their bills is increasing rapidly and for the time being, at least, this trend shows no sign of reversing.Previously, lenders who had borrowers that had fallen into arrears would normally, only go as far as to post negative credit information upon the debtors [more...]

Market Commentary From Monty Guild

Dear CIGAs, The end of September is here.  We wish you a happy and healthy fall season in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere. THE G-20 MEETING Last Thursday and Friday, the G-20 meeting was held in Pittsburgh.  At this meeting, it was decided that world economic power, which had been the bailiwick of the eight G-8 countries, should be broadened to give more voice to twelve additional countries.  This gives the G-20 power to set world economic policies.  The [more...]

Jim Grant Is Wrong About The "V"

This weekend, Jim Grant presented his case for a V-shaped recovery, a call that turned heads given Grant's longtime bearishness. His case was that economies rebound at the same trajectory at which they decline, and so sharp downturns are followed by sharp upturns. We voiced our skepticism here . Basically, our argument is that it's different this time -- that due to high debt levels and the unsustanability of the pax economica that preceded the crisis, there would be no fast snapback. Why There Will Be No Recovery and Markets Will Trend Lower

With large continuing trade deficits, declining manufacturing and rising public debt, we cannot expect a recovery. Worse, we can expect economic conditions to deteriorate until we face the prospect of a total collapse in the United States economy. Here is why. We all know that our trade deficits are through the roof. We import a great deal and we manufacture less and less to export. The services of our service economy are not really exportable like manufactured goods. [more...]

Will Deflationary Forces Overwhelm Global Fiscal Stimulus?

While Uncle Sam and his international brethren are doing everything they can to reflate the global economy, will the deflationary forces deeply embedded in the deleveraging process carry the day and the future? In doing so, will these deflationary forces usher in an economic dynamic not seen since the 1930s? The analysis and review by market savants, media mavens, and government pundits is ultimately mere noise relative to the denouement of the question proffered above. [more...]

How Ghana Did It - George B.N. Ayittey, Ph.D.

September 28th, 2009 PrintEmail Goto commentsLeave a comment When President Obama visited Ghana in July 2009, he said the choice was based on Ghana’s record on good governance. The irony was that the NDC government, which just took office just January 2009, obviously could lay claim to that model of distinction. More importantly, those familiar with Ghanaian history in the late 1980s and 1990s would recall that the P/NDC regime was most ferociously resistant to change. [more...]
