In major settlement, St. Louis Park company agrees to stop handling consumer arbitration disputes
Less than a week after being sued by the Minnesota attorney general’s office, the nation’s largest arbitrator of credit card and consumer collections has agreed to stop performing such work, state Attorney General Lori Swanson announced today. The National Arbitration Forum, based in St. Louis Park, allegedly deceived consumers into thinking it was a neutral arbitrator in debt collection, the lawsuit said. [more...]

Finally, some happy news for credit card holders. Late last week, Bank of America announced it will no longer require customers who sign up for their credit cards, bank accounts and certain loans to give away their right to sue in a dispute. Bank of America’s decision is the biggest yet in a growing movement away from mandatory arbitration clauses, which force consumers who have a problem with a service provider into private arbitration forums to settle disputes. Major Trend Continues: Credit Card Debt Decreasing

Skype to get new owner. eBay ( EBAY ) is expected to announce this morning that it has reached a deal to sell its Skype unit to a group of private investors. The investment group likely includes new venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, as well as early Skype investor Index Ventures and private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners.
