50%+ rally in the stock market but situation is getting much worse
We have enjoyed a +50 percent rally in the stock market yet this rally has been unable to create private sector jobs or stem the economic pain for most. Millions have seen their bills skyrocket, credit card interest rates hiked, hour’s cut, wages slashed, and are dealing with an accelerating decline in home prices (FL) and pitiful stock portfolios. In order to get a sustained recovery, consumer spending (70% GDP) will have to rebound sharply, which is not going to happen anytime soon. [more...]

Translating Corporate Speak: Wynn [Unforeseen Upside Edition #3]
More magic from Steve Wynn — slightly delayed due to our summer escapades — on his 2Q09 conference call. The Administration is more of a problem than they are of a help usually, if you read the headlines. Everyone is frightened to death about runaway inflation if these deficits are allowed to take place. The good news is the Senate seems to be slowing it down. But we can’t see where it’s good for business to have that debt as a percentage of GDP go from 30% to 60% or 70%. [more...]

Big Merger Deals Signal Restored Confidence
After a period of hibernation, corporate mergers and acquisitions are back on the agenda, Andrew Ross Sorkin writes in his latest DealBook column. While the price tags may not be hitting the highs they did during the boom times, the return of bigger M.&A. deals signals an increasing confidence among chief executives, who until now have been hesitant to ink any deals, Mr. Sorkin says. One segment that has not jumped back into the deal-making fray, however, is the private equity industry. [more...]

Forgiven Debt Really is Income
There was a pretty good post over at WiseBread yesterday on how if a credit card company forgives some of what you owe, what was forgiven is income you have to pay taxes on. On the one hand, this is a point worth repeating because it seems to surprise most people. On the other hand, the post neglects to mention an important exception, and, moreover, feeds into the belief that this is an irrational fluke of the tax code. It isn’t. It makes sense. You owe Credit Card Corporation (CCC) $5000. [more...]

The 7 new rules of financial security

What do you do, sir?”Money has long advocated the benefits of consistency in your investing and financial planning. [more...]

Corporate banking - a new phenomenon of new socio economic global order

Will Deflationary Forces Overwhelm Global Fiscal Stimulus?
While Uncle Sam and his international brethren are doing everything they can to reflate the global economy, will the deflationary forces deeply embedded in the deleveraging process carry the day and the future? In doing so, will these deflationary forces usher in an economic dynamic not seen since the 1930s? The analysis and review by market savants, media mavens, and government pundits is ultimately mere noise relative to the denouement of the question proffered above. [more...]

Behind the Gambit in the A.S.C.-Xerox Deal
DealBook’s Andrew Ross Sorkin makes the case that the uptick in the stock market and the slow return of credit are reviving the mergers and acquisitions market. The question, however, is not whether the M.&A. market will revive, but instead whether everyone will simply go back to the old party and its bad practices. The question arises yet again as a result of Darwin Deason’s latest gambit. Mr. Deason is the chairman of Affiliated Computer Services, and owns a near-controlling stake in the company. [more...]
