On July 1, 2008, the interest rate on subsidized federal student loans dropped from 6.8% to 6%. This .8% cut will save an average of $2570 for borrowers starting school in 2008. Rates on subsidized federal Stafford loans for undergraduates will continue to drop over the next three years until the rate is halved to 3.4%.
