Rating cannot be construed as a substitute for an exhaustive audit or a fraud detection
Sep 26, 2009Accounting, Audit The credit crisis has exposed weaknesses in many financial intermediaries. How can rating agencies ensure their views are more accurate and unbiased? Despite due diligence, there is always scope for improvement. Credit rating agencies (CRA) do not carry out a separate audit but takes cognisance of the information available from annual reports, submissions from management, secondary sources and opinions from lenders/ investors. Four Big Economic Indicators to Watch
There are many items that influence the day-to-day moves in a stock, bond, or commodity’s price — earnings news, corporate financials, simple supply and demand, and a whole lot more. Heck, I’ve even read an academic study that argued the weather has a huge influence on whether markets close up or down! But when it comes to figuring out the bigger-picture, longer-term moves for whole investment classes, there’s nothing better than watching a few key economic indicators. [more...]

You did not miss out, you did not escape; you're next. Job Opportunity : The US has an immediate opening for someone to convincingly explain how an economic recovery can lead to 3% GDP growth if the consumer is unemployed. Speed Trap : Global warming is exceeding the most extreme predictions of the last IPCC report, as global carbon emissions have accelerated from a 1.1% annual increase to over 3.5% per year. My Identity may have Been Compromised
I got a notice yesterday that my identity maybe, could have, probably, possibly been compromised. The scariest part of it is the information that was compromised is essentially my entire life, it was a background investigation file. I am fortunate to be close enough to the issue that I know the risk associated with what happened is extremely low if not non existent. Just to be on the safe side I have been provided with 1 year of complimentary credit monitoring. [more...]

FreeCreditReport.com Review: Not a Free Credit Report
Have you heard of those commercials on TV that talk about “free” credit reports? These services, such as FreeCreditReport.com are *not* truly free. They offer free trials for a limited time (usually 7 days) but they’re actually paid subscription services after the intro period is over. They’re in the business of credit monitoring and tracking your credit standing. Image by Andre Rolim/Getty Images These services exist to help us keep an eye on our credit reports. [more...]

AEI Interns’ Transcripts in Date Order: Their Own First Draft of History
First of all, I want to reemphasize everything Laurie just said. This is not a new threat, and this is not a threat we did not know about. Saddam Hussein has, in many ways, openly dreamed of mass death in the United States. He has shared his dreams with his nation and the world many times. We also know he has actively planned to do so many times, and Laurie’s book is a rather convincing argument that he is active and successfully implemented plans to do so as well. [more...]

Banks Still Love Credit Default Swaps
File this under Same Shit Different Day. I came across this article today on HuffPost: Banks Still Trading In Risky Derivatives . I found a new report: OCC's OCC’s Quarterly Report on Bank Trading and Derivatives Activities Second Quarter 2009 (pdf file). I am kind of slow so this report may not be old news to most EP people. Where has the Bailout Money Gone? Good Billions After Bad
Where has the Bailout Money Gone? Good Billions After Bad Vanity Fair by Donald L. Barlett and James B. There is another candidate for "largest Chinese investment in Australia ever." But this time, it involves an asset that is arguably more strategic than oil and more precious than gold. No surprise here; FBI and likely other federal agencies abuse the use of National Security Letters. Support the JUSTICE Act unless the Republicans can do better.
I have been railing against the Patriot Act (which is anything but) since its passage and I physically protested same back when AG Ashcroft visited Salt Lake City in circa 2003. Numerous provisions of that Act signed into law by the SOB (Son Of a Bush) were and remain egregious. The Patriot Act assailed our rights on so many fronts, not the least of which was broadening the use of National Security Letters (NSL). [more...]

Is this economic downturn just what the doctor ordered?
If the recession has you worried about paying for visits to the doctor, here’s a small silver lining: a new study strengthens the link between a bad economy and good health. The Great Depression that began with the stock market crash of 1929 was the economic low point of the 20 th century. The economy shrank at annual rates reaching 14%, and unemployment peaked at 22.9%. The recovery didn’t begin until the middle of 1933. [more...]
