Bad Credit? Have We Got a Mortage for You...

From Giovanni Diviacchi:My wife and I want to buy a house, but we found that the only mortgage that we were eligible for was a new product called a Late Payment Mortgage.  It's for people with really bad credit.  The bank gives you a lower interest rate if you let them begin foreclosure proceedings at the closing table.***Giovanni Diviacchi is a business analyst and stand-up comedian in  Washington, D.C. Bank of Up Yours America

This really bothers me. I still do work for a few clients, mostly ESL folks who need help with letters and other necessary communications. Let’s call this guy Pham. Pham just spent six months jumping through hoops trying to get his mortgage company to refinance his house so he could get a lower rate. Back and forth the faxes and letters went. The final stack of documentation demanded was literally six inches high. I know because I saw it today when he dropped it all off. [more...]

Saving Thousands on a Refinance is Easy When You Know How

by Brian Armstrong When you consider that most homeowners don’t know too much about refinancing, we assume that people learn some of the key phrases that mortgage companies use to advertise their refinance programs. These phrases are things like “no cost”, “no points”, APR, streamline, closing costs, an many more terms that don’t do much more than get people in the door. Once you’re in the door, you will then need to determine whether or not you want to work with the loan officer you meet. [more...]

Ahem: NYT Reporter Who Defaulted On Subprime Mortage Left Out Key Details

Last week, we flagged the harrowing story of Edmund Andrews , the New York Times  economics reporter who got himself into a debt nightmare and defaulted on his mortgage.  The central tension of that story, you may recall, was the gulf between Andrews' attitude toward his money problems (understandable panic) and the attitude of his new wife Patty (whatever).  This tension was made more unsettling because Patty seemed to be responsible for much of the overspending.  The marriage tension aside, [more...]

Fool's Gold

Gillian Tett's book on the financial crisis is the one that I would recommend at this point. Some notes and excerpts below. This may reflect my biases, but what I took away from the book was the co-ordination between regulators and market participants in promoting securitization and exotic financing techniques. Today, the regulatory community whines about the systemic risk that financial technology created. At the time, the regulators were approving and encouraging the process. [more...]
